Visa E-identity authentication makes registration easier for students

University of Jyvaskyla - By authenticating their identity by means of the Visa authentication solution, students were able to obtain a University e-mail address and a temporary password before arriving on campus.

Easy and fast solution

The authentication process is carried out via the student’s Visa card. The system is able to identify which bank has provided the Visa card and automatically moves the student to their bank, where their identity is verified. When the student enters his/her web banking codes, the system can authenticate the student’s identity. This whole process takes only a minute and allows the student to begin using the university services approximately two weeks before he/she arrives on campus.

Added value through internationality and flexibility

The importance of secure transactions and identification becomes more important with the increase of new service possibilities on the Internet; both commercial as well as governmental services. Heikki Kapanen, managing director of Luottokunta, draws attention to the fact that in a global world an important advantage of this authentication solution is that it can be used internationally and is interoperable with existing security technology such as chip cards, PKI or security codes. Mr Kapanen says that the authentication solution is especially interesting for Finnish banks operating in the international market.

The positive result from the pilot shows that the e-authentication solution can be used in other public sector institutions where secure identification is necessary.

The pilot carried out at the University of Jyväskylä Finland. It was conducted jointly by Visa Europe and the University of Jyvaskyla, and included participants, Luottokunta, OP Bank Group, Nordea, Sampo Bank, Visa International and technology provider Modirum Oy.
